A teacher in college told me this one:
She was teaching English in a school in Boro Park. On the first day she sent home a list of supplies the kids would need. On the list was “dictionary, thesaurus, notebook” etc — your standard English class equipment.
Well, the next day one child came in with a very irate note from her mother:
“Why are you asking my child to bring in a thesaurus? We are good ehrliche yidden, and we do not believe in thesauruses. I do not allow my daughter to learn about thesauruses in school.”
Obviously, she didn’t have a dictionary either.
